Distractions

Welcome to the people who have decided to take The Pledge. Remember, you can join in at anytime so, if you aren’t ready yet, take your time and be sure to continue telling other people about it.

Have you ever had one of those weeks that things just don’t go your way? This is one of those weeks for me. Not only do I have a ton of homework due this weekend but I also have been so busy, I have little time for anything more than free-writes and blog entries.

In fact, though television is like my kryptonite, I have seen almost nothing this week. I have watched just a little of the Olympics but really nothing more. Bottom line is that I’ve just been too busy with other stuff and obviously I have to put homework first and it takes up a lot of time.

Normally my day is that I wake up, do a one page free-write (generally inspired by a dream) and then I schedule my twitter updates for the day. At this point, it’s time to be a mom. I feed the kids and get them ready for the day. If we don’t have anything planned, I let them pick a movie and we head upstairs to start it. Starting the kids on a movie generally gives me about 30 minutes of uninterrupted time to write so I check my assignments and complete any of the small ones which are due that day. At some point I get distracted by Facebook, blogs or an idea for a story but I try to finish-up the little assignments, plus catching up and commenting on other people’s blogs, by lunch time. Then we all head downstairs for food and then it’s back upstairs for quiet time. Both kids go in their rooms for one hour for quiet reading time. The little one usually falls asleep and my four year old does a little homeschool-type study with me for about 30 mins. But, during the house of quiet time I’m usually working on an essay for school. Most days, any other writing has to wait until after bedtime though. And then I’m really distracted because I want to veg-out and spend time with my husband.

That’s a typical day in my life. Tell me, how do you get time to work on your writing? What things get in your way?

I use my Hotmail calendar and strictly schedule my day. Every hour!!

I didn't know you could set Twitter updates. Do you mean like time released updates? How?

Really great blog.

Okay, I lied. I've tried TwitAhead and TwitResponse, and when I schedule nothing happens. Can you recommend one?

Thanks!

This is inspiring, Liz! I need to schedule time for writing. The marathon training gets in the way, but I know there's time...I just have to be more conscious about it. :)

I do mine first thing in the morning. So when the day goes crazy, I have at least one thing to show for it...lol. :)
